No more having to look at Google maps anymore if you own an iPhone. At the WWDC in San Francisco a few days ago, Apple and TomTom announced that coming this summer (2010) there will be a TomTom app for the iPhone. The GPS app will include turn-by-turn directions, IQ Routes, and the latest maps from Tele Atlas. You’ll also have the option of buying a car kit which would include a car dock, enhanced GPS performance, voice instructions, hands-free calling, and charging. No specific date has been announced yet, and don’t expect this app to be $0.99 cause it’ll probably cost somewhere around $75. This is a huge deal for the iPhone, as it will be the only smart-phone with REAL GPS functionality and turn-by-turn directions. Even with a bit of a steep price-tag, don’t be surprised if you see a lot of people opting to purchase this app. Perhaps it will also motivate other cell carriers (i.e., Verizon, AT&T, T Mobile, etc.) to start talking to either TomTom or perhaps other popular GPS software companies like Garmin or Magellan about creating their own apps as well. This may help tip the scales for a while towards Apple, especially if they keep striking big deals like this.
